"A Hybrid Signal Enhancement Method for Robust Speech Recognition".
Workshop on Robust Methods for Speech Recognition in Adverse Conditions
Tampere, Finland, 25-26 May, 1999
Adaptive Lattice-Ladder Filtering and Spectral Subtraction Methods have been used for years to enhance speech corrupted by noise with sensible improvements in signal quality granting better results in Speech Recognition Systems working under severe noisy conditions. This paper shows how a specific collaboration between both techniques may produce even better results than using any of them independently from the other. The paper addresses the foundations of the hybrid technique and gives some examples of noise reduction to focus in the specific methodology being used. Results when this technique is applied to Isolated Word Speech Recognition are also given and commented. Possible applications of the technique are to be found in Robust Speech Communication and in Speech Controlled Interfaces.
